The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues certain documents to ensure car titles to vehicle owners as a proof of ownership to the vehicle owners. Information regarding the address of the vehicle owner, the model of the vehicle and the first date and year of purchasing are maintained in a car title. At the time of reselling a vehicle, its title is signed by its original owner and then it is registered by a new owner. From then on the new owner is regarded as the current owner of the car and given a new car title by the DMV. Certain other relevant information and terms are also maintained in a car title, but that should be inquired well at the time of purchasing a used car. Some of the used car title terms and their meanings are discussed in the following paragraphs.

Salvage Titles

A car carrying a clear title signifies of not having any legend or sub labels. It should also not be mistaken as salvage or junked car. A clear title is considered as the best among all without any future inconvenience. So when you are buying an old car, it is better to choose one with a clear title.

The united states have faced lot many natural disasters in recent past. Due to the impact of floods and hurricanes, the most common title in market is the salvaged titles. When a car faces some sort of accident or comes in contact with fire, vandalism and gets damaged, it is declared as a totaled car by the insurance company. In other term, you can also call it a salvaged car. After going through the repairing process, the cars are reconstructed and come to market. So it is not advisable to go for salvage title cars. In some states, branded titles are applied to salvage cars.

Reconstructed Titles

Then comes the reconstructed titles. When a car, after facing some sort of damages, is repaired, rebuilt and inspected to finally come to the market, it is given a reconstructed title. So reconstructed titles are provided to those cars which have been reconstructed or rebuilt. These titles also carry sub tags which specify the vehicle’s damage history. So before going for a vehicle with reconstructed title, have a watch to its sub tag specifying flood, fire, collision, theft or some other reasons.

Different states use different titles to label their vehicles. If you come across a vehicle having a rebuilt or reconstructed title, then you should make sure yourself that it is a salvage vehicle which has now come to the market after repairs.

Flood Titles, Junk and Scrap, Hail Damage Titles

You should also avoid junk, flood damage and hail damage titles while buying used cars. Remember that even if cars come within a warranty period, the warranties provided by manufacturers on junk and salvage titled cars are regarded as void or null. Parts from other machines and spares are used to rebuild the damaged or totaled cars. Most of the people avoid these cars at car auctions and used car dealerships. If you are unknown about the other car titles, then it is advisable to consult with yourlocal Department of Public Safety for better advantages.
